The New Orleans Saints took the field as an expansion team in 1967 with a logo very similar to their current icon, a black fleur-de-lis against a gold helmet. Over the years the icon has been refined, most notably in 2000, when the Saints made their fleur-de-lis bolder and gold with a black outline on white backgrounds. The team has used a few alternate logos as well, from Sir Saint to a shield mark as well as a state patch. The helmets, as mentioned, have been gold throughout the team’s history with the lone exception of the 1969 preseason, when the team tried a black helmet with a gold fleur. The shade of gold has changed over time, as the team from the Big Easy started with a warm, coppery gold in 1967, but switched to a more mustard shade in 1969. In 1975, they would split the difference, with the regal hue further lightened to a Vegas Gold in 1981, where it sits today. From their inception through the 1985 season, the Saints tried a couple different striping patterns. They would switch to a Louisiana logo on the sleeves for the ’86 season, and to the fleur-de-lis starting in 1996. The numbers have also changed color over the years, with the team originally wearing gold numbers on their home blacks and road whites, switching to white and black numbers in 1970. The gold numbers would return for home and road in 1996 before black numbers were used again on the road in 1999. My Saints rebrand takes a significantly different approach to what the team has used over the past 50-plus seasons. I developed a new primary logo around a St. Bernard that appears against a white and gold shield with a halo on its head as the primary icon. It is combined with their name for the team signature. The alternate logo takes the dog’s fleur-de-lis nose and uses it in a standalone capacity. The coaches’ caps have a stylized N.O. while the classic fleur is retained for the throwbacks. The typeface brings the city’s charm to the forefront with an ornamental flair reminiscent of the port city’s wrought iron fences. The new helmets are white with gold facemarks and a bold gold stripe outlined in black. The St. Bernard shield appears on each side of the players’ heads. The home jerseys are gold with bold white sleeve stripes and numbers outlined in black and a fleur-de-lis just below the collar. The home golds can be paired with either white pants for a classic white-gold-white look or gold pants for a mono-gold style. The away white jerseys follow the striping style of the helmets with gold outlined in black and are also paired with white or gold pants. The alternate jerseys a switch things up a little with no white on them, instead using two thin gold stripes on black with gold numbers outlined in charcoal. The alternate jerseys can be worn with matching black pants or white pants. The throwback uniforms return the Saints to the early days with a gold helmet, number and pants, as well as white and gold stripes on each sleeve.
