In late 2008, I was approached by the Clinton LumberKings of the Midwest League to develop the branding for their upcoming All-Star Game. Working directly with the Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations at the time, I developed a number on concepts to present to the General Manager over a span of roughly two weeks, leading to the two finalized logos you see. Consistent themes throughout the process included: wood grain, stars, Louie the LumberKing, and the paddlewheel sign that appears as you cross the Mississippi into Iowa announcing that you have arrived in Clinton. The primary logo, which features Louie against a star with the city’s famous paddlewheel and a pair of crossed bats, appeared on caps, jerseys, and other materials, while the secondary logo, which puts a greater emphasis on the paddlewheel, was mostly used in print.
We enlisted Bowen Hobbs to design the 2009 Midwest League All-Star Game logo set while I was with the Clinton LumberKings. Utilizing the unique identity of our team and the city of Clinton, Bowen designed logos that perfectly displayed our ties to the nearby Mississippi River and the city’s historic status as the one-time “Lumber Capital of the World.” His logos were displayed on everything from the uniforms worn by both the East and West Division teams, the baseballs used during the game, all promotional and marketing materials, merchandise and more. I strongly recommend Bowen’s design skills for any sports event logo.
