Detroit Tigers

As a charter member of the American League, the Detroit Tigers began play in 1901. Those first few seasons were marked by the use of black and red as the team’s colors. In 1905, the Tigers would adopt their classic navy-and-white color scheme alongside an early version of their Olde English D. They would also tinker with different fonts for the D insignia but always came back to Olde English. 1927 would see the introduction of orange to the team’s palette along with a tiger head mark that would appear on the left chest of their jerseys. The early 1930s saw the Tigers experiment with a script Detroit on their jerseys, which would stay on the road greys until 1960. A block DETROIT would replace the script Detroit while a script Tigers would appear on the homes for a just a season before the Olde English D returned to its place on the left chest. In 1972, as the teams switched to double-knit polyester uniforms, Detroit unveiled a new road uniform with an arched DETROIT in navy with an orange outline on a grey pullover v-neck jersey. Navy, white, and orange trim would appear on the collar, sleeve, belt, and pant legs. The v-necks would last until the 1994 season, when Motown’s team would wear a one-season road uniform with racing stripes on the shoulders. A new orange-brimmed cap was also unveiled at that time, but it lasted three season instead of one. In 1995, the Tigers unveiled the road uniform they wear today with the script Detroit returning after a long hiatus. The Tigers made some small changes to their uniform program in 2018 by matching the jersey’s D to the cap and making the D on the caps larger. However, the D on the caps returned to its normal size for the 2019 season after fans rejected the larger logo. My Tigers redesign reimagines the history of Motown baseball if the team had never settled on the Olde English D. The primary logo places a block D with claw marks in an oval holding shape with a striped ring and DETROIT TIGERS in banners at the top and bottom. The primary logo breaks down into a textless version as well as a standalone D that appears on the home and away caps. A cartoon tiger complements the logo set, while the Olde English D remains for throwback purposes. The new block typeface features claw marks on the initial letters and a mix of serifed and non-serifed strokes among the letterforms. The home uniforms start with a navy cap with a white block D placed over white jerseys with headspoon piping and the block D on the left chest. The socks offer a splash of orange with alternating orange and navy tiger stripes that only show on players who opt for high-cuffed pants. The away grey uniforms use navy caps with an orange D atop flannel-textured grey uniforms with DETROIT across the chest and simple navy piping down the legs. The throwback recall the current longstanding home uniforms down to every detail. The home alternates recall the teams on the late 1920s and early 1930s with orange pinstripes and the tiger logo on the left chest. A navy alternate jersey with orange piping and type can be worn at home or on the road. The BP caps are orange with a navy logo and brim and pair with navy training jerseys that feature orange type and trim.
