The Houston Texans were born as the NFL’s 32nd team in 2002, but the city of Houston and the Texans moniker both have previous history in the League. Houston’s first pro football team was the Oilers, an original AFL team before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. They would wear columbia blue, white, and red uniforms for 37 seasons before leaving the Lone Star State for Tennessee and becoming the Titans two seasons later. “Texans” was the original name for the Kansas City Chiefs, who started as the Dallas Texans before moving north after their first three seasons. Back to the current Texans, the team unveiled its uniforms in time for the 2002 season, and have not changed their on-field system since. The helmets are navy with a red, white, and navy bull with a lone star eye. The home jerseys are navy with sharp red shoulder accents and white numbers outlined in red, while the away jerseys are white with red numbers, navy outlines, and navy shoulder accents. The Texans would add a “battle red” third jersey in their second season that featured white type and navy accents. All three jerseys can be paired with either white or navy pants, with an all-red option used from 2007 through 2010. My Texans rebrand aims to refresh the on-field identity and help the Texans carve out their own niche amongst the League’s multiple red-and-blue teams. Color-wise, I switched to a red-dominant scheme, with navy, white, and a light khaki color rounding out the palette. The new primary icon is comprised of an interlocking HT in which the T features horns as its crossbar with a star inside a circle that evokes cattle brands. The alternate logo reimagines the bull from the team’s current logo, but with a more illustrative approach and touches of the new khaki color. The primary icon is combined with a stout western style block font that features a subtle drop shadow to become the team signature, while a standalone HT mark and the original bull head round out the logo set. The helmet keeps its navy hue, but with a matte finish and the circular HT logo. To give the Texans more distinction from the Patriots and their divisional rival, the Titans, I went with a red primary home jersey. It features navy cap sleeves with a white lone star, as well as navy western shirt piping that runs along the players’ collarbones. The away jersey is white with red type and navy sleeves. Both can be paired with white or khaki pants. The alternate uniforms opt for a navy jersey with khaki type and red accents that can be paired with khaki pants or navy pants for a special primetime look. The throwbacks bring back the styling of the inaugural home uniforms, with the original bull on the helmets and the sharp red shoulder accents.
