Indianapolis Colts

Outside of some minor tweaks, the Colts franchise has been a model of consistency regarding their uniform program. For the team’s first few seasons, they sported simple royal blue and white jerseys with block numbers, a thin triple stripe on each sleeve, and a single stripe down each leg. The helmets from this initial era were sometimes white, sometimes blue, and sometimes featured a pair of horseshoes on the back. By their fifth season, the Baltimore Colts would settle into their basic uniform template: a white helmet with a single blue stripe and a horseshoe on each side, blue and white jerseys with block numbers and a double stripe on each shoulder, and white pants with a double stripe down each leg. The facemasks would switch from grey to white for the 1978 season, and the Colts would switch to sliver pants at home for the 1982, ’83, ’84, ’85, and ’86 seasons, a time in which they silently moved to Indianapolis in the dead of night, before reverting to the standard blue-and-white look in 1987. In 1995, the facemask color would change again, this time to royal blue, while royal pants were added for the season, paired with the white jersey. In 2004, the facemasks would return to their original grey. The royal blue pants would come back in 2017 and pair with the royal jersey for a mono-royal look. My Colts redesign concept attempts to balance modernization with the long consistent history of the franchise. The primary icon I developed is a more stylized horseshoe rotated to create a C. The icon appears above a custom but restrained block font to create the team signature. The alternate logo features a front-facing young horse rendered in royal and white, ready for action. An Indiana-I mark and the classic horseshoe complete the logo offerings. The helmets remain white, but with a double-stripe featuring dots in the middle to complement the horseshoe-C logo, which is placed on each side. The facemasks return to white. The home jersey opts for classic royal blue, with the dotted striping on each sleeve and the Indiana-I patch on the left chest. The home jersey pairs with white or royal pants that feature striping consistent with the helmets and jerseys. The away jerseys use the same pattern as the homes, but swap the blue and white. They also pair with white or royal pants. The alternates add a cream jersey with blue type to the mix and pair with cream or white pants, while the throwbacks bring back the classic shoulder-striped uniforms that both Johnny Unitas and Peyton Manning wore  en route to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
