San Antonio Spurs

Since moving from Dallas in 1973, the Spurs’s logo has always featured a SPURS wordmark with a literal spur on the U. Over the years, the team added a pastel paint splash which was replaced with a southwestern themed holding shape before being removed when Nike took over the uniform contract. With such a consistent history, I felt it was time to take a chance at reimagining the Spurs brand. My concept places a southwestern basketball symbol rendered in black and silver beneath a new SPURS script with the spur placed on the R instead of the U. The lower line of the southwestern basketball outlines the front of The Alamo. The symbol can work in a standalone capacity as well. The secondary logo is a cowboy boot, spurred up of course, while a spur/basketball icon and an S monogram round out the rest of the logo set. The SPURS script was developed to recall images of ranch signs, while the SAN ANTONIO wordmark features an athletic block serif. The numerals are a custom designed typeface that balances the classic styles of the Spurs with the updated typography. The uniforms feature thin black side panels outlined in silver capped by an Alamo detail on the shorts. Both the Icon and Association jerseys say SPURS on the chest, as the team has done since 1989. The Alternate uniform works from the same overall template as the Icon and Association, but the team name is replaced by the spur icon against a silver base. The Pride uniforms blend the George Gervin ABA days with the fiesta splash. SAN ANTONIO appears across the chest in a black-on-black treatment, and fiesta-colored trim accents the neck, arm holes, waistband, and the bottom of the shorts. A recolored version of the southwestern symbol accents the shorts on both legs. The court uses a classic look with black boundaries and SAN ANTONIO SPURS on each baseline. The wood is stained in a slightly darker shade to accent the silver lines along the lane.
