Washington Wizards

In 1997, when the Washington Wizards changed there name from the Washington Bullets in order to downplay gun violence in favor of a more family-friendly name, they unveiled a logo that drew the ire of the Association for how the abstraction of the wizard mascot read too childlike for a pro team. The Wizards would go on to keep that logo in various color combinations until 2015, when they unveiled a magic wand/Washington Monument roundel as the primary mark. And while the team initially moved to the Wizards moniker with a color palette of French blue, black, and copper, the copper eventually became gold and the scheme was scrapped for a traditional red, white, navy, and silver scheme that speaks to D.C as Our Nation’s capital. My design brings back a wizard, though it is rendered in a completely different style and pose. My wizard is hunched over a crystal ball/basketball hybrid in front of DC’s classic two bars and three stars. That circular icon appears with and without text, while the wizard also appears by himself in some applications. The secondary logo features a crystal basketball against a star, while a Monument-W icon completes the logo set. The wordmarks use a short, wide serif typeface with stars cut into the A’s. The numerals are slightly more square, but still feature flared serifs and slightly wider vertical strokes. The jerseys contain two stripes and three stars containing the team name across the chest, with the two bars repeated on the shorts. A thin line of trim appears along the shorts, neck and arm holes, as well as running up the sides of the uniforms. The Association edition is white, while the Icon edition comes in red and the Alternate in navy. The Pride uniform throws back to the 2000s, when the team wore French blue and black. The court continues the American color way with red boundaries and navy in the paint. WASHINGTON WIZARDS appears at each baseline between two white bars, with DC FAMILY along the sideline.
